I don't think we'll ever find that out. You'll have to look it up but there are some videos of it early on, right after the game's release. I could not have taken long for someone to loose one in the river, see that it kept floating and wanted to get on and figure out how. I mean, some things are just natural. I heard about for the first time in July 2010 and some people already knew most of the good spots.

If that's the case; the same way as the gatling gun coach as far as I can remember.

I never saw the Gatling coach brought into free roam myself. Eyewitness accounts suggest it's hard to keep it for any length of time. As soon as you get shot off it (which won't take long if you travel near others), it'll likely disappear. And if you take it in the water, it floats low and it's easy to drown.

The origin of Stagecoach Boating.

I recently deleted all RDR game data to go back to version 1.0 to experience the original unpatched  buggy single player (hoping to get HD footage of bird ppl, cougar man, donkey lady, etc). As soon as I got to the mission in Armadillo when the stagecoach becomes available I took it to the river to get to Blackwater early. After launching the coach I waited for the 'pop', I drowned. I tried again at the always reliable Thieves Landing launch spot, drowned again.

In the unpatched version of the game you can use wagons & coaches to access buildings by shooting the horses and the driver jumps out and through whatever is on the left, houses, Fort Mercer, etc. One of the early patches (not sure if v1.01 or v1.02) fixed it so that if you shoot the horses while you're up against a wall the game will 'pop' you up on top of the drivers seat. The game recognised the water as an object next to the coach and now 'pops' you on the driver seat when you drive into to the water. Stagecoach Boating was born.

The stagecoach still floats in v1.0, so technically boating was possible before the patch to 'pop' you on top but it's true success of popularity came from ease of launching via the 'pop', it allowed even a novice to just drive in and wait to be 'popped' on top for a no hassle boat ride.
"Two things I love most, good horses and beautiful women, and when I die I hope they tan this old hide of mine and make it into a ladies riding saddle, so I can rest in peace between the two things I love the most" - Quote from Russel.J.Larsen's Tombstone.

You should post a short video about this on your Youtube channel or maybe even in the Red Dead Wiki just for the hell of it.

I added your damn useful tip of aiming while driving off cliffs and what not to stay on the stagecoach and go over the waterfall. I think we're just about as close as it is possible to get to having compiled a real, honest to goodness "definitive" guide. And I was kidding at first but I'll be damned... This forum just keeps on going. It's awesome.

I’m not the avid player I used to be but I still take regular RDR vacations from the game I usually play. It was sad to realize there are some game modes that are pretty dead (Stronghold, RIP my love!) but Free Roam is still rockin’ and I’ll be damned if people don’t send me messages to go boating all the time. This thread and the video I made from it have been a constant source of good fun and even if I don’t log in much anymore, this forum is still one of my favorite places on them interwebs. Cheers, gunslingers!

I'm not sure if this has been said but me and my friends have been doing a lot of boating recently and we've found that The Old Bacchus Place is a good spot and you get past Butter Bridge :) However, we keep getting stuck after that and we've been trying ways to get further along to go down the waterfall ;)

Well, I've never gotten anywhere by going in at Old Bacchus Place. If you want to go over the waterfall, the best method is to drive the coach over the cliff while aiming (from either side of the river) and splash in after Butter Bridge. From there, you’ll go down the waterfall.

Ferguson013:  it'd be fun to have a reunion some time

Last few times we did Thieves' Landing, we kept getting stuck near the Old Bacchus' Place. Normally we would go further until underneath the bridge...

A reunion would be cool (thumbsup2)

Yeah, the old stuck points have changed a bit. Additionally the Ramita de la Baya stuck point just before the bridge is now further away from shore than before so it's hard to push the coach with a horse anymore in there.
