Breaking the Law:
Wanted Level & Bounty System

______________________________________________________________

Most towns and settlements have some form of lawmen. Be it sheriff, a marshall, or the army. If a crime you committed (SEE LIST OF POSSIBLE CRIMES) is reported to the law, you obtain a Wanted Level and a Bounty is placed on you.

Your crimes will be reported by an eyewitness. If civilians see you commit a serious crime, or several minor crimes in a short period of time, one will become a "witness"and attempt to report the crime to local law enforcement. You can stop eyewitnesses, they show up as an eye icon on the minimap, from reporting your crime by bribing them or killing them. If they succeed in reaching lawmen, or a lawmen sees you commit any crime, you will gain a Wanted Level and have the appropriate bounty added to your list of fees.

The higher the bounty, the more lawmen join the pursuit. You remain Wanted, actively pursued by law enforcement, as long as lawmen or civilians can see you. Their vision range is represented by a red/black circle in the minimap. When you are Wanted the meter in the top right corner, inside the word Wanted, will be filled red. You can lose your Wanted Level by breaking the lawmen's line of sight and hiding. As soon as you lose the pursuit, the meter slowly drains. Allow it to drain all the way you you are no longer actively pursued by the law. You may also kill them all to lose your Wanted  Level or Bribe them (scroll down for how to do this) But remember any crime committed thereafter results in a response equal to your total bounty value, picking the chase right back up.

Even if you manage to escape the law and lose your Wanted Level, deadly bounty hunters that consist of posses will come after you every so often, every 30-40 minutes of real time on average. They will be greater in number depending on your bounty amount; 3-4 members for $150+ Bounty, 6 and one dog for $1,700+, 8 and 2 dogs for $3,700+, 10 and 3 dogs for $5,000+, and 12 and 4 dogs for $7,000+. They may be Special Forces: US Marshals/Mexican Army (see below for more on these) as well.

This is because the Bounty System tracks your criminal behavior in a more permanent fashion. Pedestrians and law in town treat you differently, depending on how large your bounty is. A bounty itself does not generate aggressive behavior from local law. You have a different territorial bounty value for buth US and Mexico. You may view your current Bounty anytime in the Pause Menu right below your current money amount.

You can get rid of your bounty in a number of ways:

• You can pay off the amount you owe at any Telegraph Office in various train stations in the different towns around the world.
• You can submit to pursuing law enforcement officers by surrendering. You may surrender if you are within 22 meters of a law officer by holstering your weapon and standing still, do not touch the controls for one second. John will put his hands in the air and the law officers will ceasefire and take you to jail. Where you serve time in for your crimes and also pay your fines, up to the full amount of the bounty.
• If you wish to work off your bounty by an alternate method you may lower the amount you owe by doing Bounty Hunter missions, the payment you receive is applied to reduce your total Bounty.
• Lastly, if you don't want to spend money nor work it off you can also use a Pardon Letter to clear the full amount of your Wanted Bounty for FREE. Turn in the Pardon Letter to the aforementioned Telegraph Office. Pardon Letters are found in chests, usually within a Gang Hideout.
Gang Hideout Chests
Exploring a Gang Hideout AFTER it has been cleared spawns reward chests scattered throughout the area. Each of these chests has a 4% chance to give a Pardon Letter, in addition to one of the following:
• 30% chance to give extra money
• 5% chance to give pistol ammo (or revoler ammo if you don't have a pistol)
• 5% chance repeater ammo (rifle ammo if you don't have a repeater, and shotgun ammo if you have neither of the above)
• Every footlocker has 2% chance to give away a Pardon Letter, except for the gang hideout exploration footlockers, those have the aforementioned 4% chance.
• Money received from footlockers will be increased if you're in combat.
• Having a rabbit's foot will increase the rewards you receive from footlockers.
Chests Per Hideout
Gang Hideout - #of Chests
Twin Rocks - 3
Gaptooth Ridge - 7
Solomon's Folly - 2
Tumbleweed - 6
Pike's Basin - 8
Fort Mercer - 5
Nosalida - 3
Tesoro Azul - 4

Special Forces:
They are called into pursuit in place of posses or bounty hunters if you have murdered 20 or more law officers. There are always four members in a special forces squad. Don't mistake their lower numbers for weakness though, they have higher individual skill then the normal posses that are sent out after you. They can be killed or just outran but NOT bribed.

Bribing
If you are within 10 meters of a law officer or eyewitness, with your gun holstered, you can bribe them to leave you alone or not report your crime.(Special Forces:US Marshal/Mexican Army may not be bribed). The Bribe amount starts at 50% of your current bounty. (25% when reached Buckaroo Fame level.) When you bribe the law, your bounty reverts to the value it was before this law response began.

Bandana:
The Bandana is available at the Tailor in Thieves' Landing and the General Store in Escalera. This piece of cloth hides your identity and while wearing it, your Honor and Fame will not change. due to your actions. Your Wanted Level will also decrease more rapidly if you remove it after you commit a crime.

Most of, if not all, this information was taken straight from the Official Strategy Guide

Thanks. I am taking off time from playing the game actually to do these threads so I'm glad you guys appreciate them. I do it so we don't have tons of the same threads asking the same info. Informative threads like this should help people find what they are looking for easier or give them a place to ask their questions and post their funny happenings.

       |_______________________________|_______________|
       |Safe cracking         |$50      |
       |_______________________________|_______________|

Each town or settlement can only sustain a certain number of lawmen. If you
kill all of that number, no new lawmen will attack you unless you begin
committing new crimes. Each area's limits are as follows:

       Armadillo         20 Lawmen
       Ridgewood Farm          5 Lawmen
       Coots Chapel          6 Lawmen
       Benedict Point          6 Lawmen
       Rathskeller Fork       5 Lawmen
       MacFarlane Ranch       6 Lawmen
       Plainview          7 Lawmen
       Escalera         30 Lawmen (+10 soldiers)
       Las Hermanas          8 Lawmen
       Agave Viejo          5 Lawmen
       Chuparosa         20 Lawmen
       El Matadero          9 Lawmen (+ 5 soldiers)
El Presidio          0 Lawmen (+12 soldiers)
       Blackwater         50 Lawmen
Pacific Union Railroad Camp    7 Lawmen
       Manzanite Post          7 Lawmen

Furthermore, once your bounty reaches a certain amount, vigilante gangs
will begin to target you, hoping to bring you in for your bounty. The size
of these posses vary depending on the size of your bounty.

       Bounty >$ 150       3-4 person posse
       Bounty >$1700       6 person posse (+1 dog)
       Bounty >$3700       8 person posse (+2 dogs)
       Bounty >$5000      10 person posse (+3 dogs)
       Bounty >$7000      12 person posse (+4 dogs)

Like lawmen, you can surrender to the posse to be captured alive by holstering
your weapon and standing still. Similar to posses, you will also be targetted
by bounty hunters, when your bounty reaches the same intervals.

       Bounty >$ 150      2 bounty hunters (+1 dog)
       Bounty >$1700      3 bounty hunters (+1 dog)
       Bounty >$3700      4 bounty hunters (+2 dogs)
       Bounty >$5000      5 bounty hunters (+3 dogs)
       Bounty >$7000      6 bounty hunters (+4 dogs)

Like lawmen and posses, you can only survive encounters with bounty hunters
by either bribing them, killing them all, or surrendering.

Also another thing i found out is that you can only increase your bounty if youre commiting crimes within the settlements, you cant gain bounty outside the villages and if you do get a posse/bountyhunters after you and you kill them out in the wilderness your bounty will reset back to the price on your head that you had when you was in the towns.

btw nicejob with the *wanted level* thread

Brilliant guide, Printing it out when I get home.

Never knew about bounty hunter missions reducing your own bounty (not done any yet with any bounty of my own).

Hey guys,
Great stuff, love the information about bounties. I ran into a little problem, i wasnt sure where to post this and since this seems to be a lot of stuff about bounties....i thought this might be an appropriate place.

Long story short i have encountered a problem, in the single player when i look at my map i see the PAY BOUNTY icon showing up in ARMADILLO. So i think "well i must have a bounty!" I check my stats to see if there is an active bounty, and there IS NOT an active bounty........yet the bounty symbol keeps showing up. So i go to Armadillo thinking well maybe i can pay it/or turn in a waiver/ or something. Then when i get into Armadillo the symbol DISSAPEARS. I'm like wait a min i know i just had a pay bounty symbol. So i leave armadillo, and then the pay bounty symbol comes back. This is annoying because sometimes i will be somewhere else and see that symbol and think i need to go pay a bounty, then i get there and remember ohh yeah no bounty.

I have tested other towns to see if this is happening in other towns and it isnt. I have read on some of the forums that others are having a similar problem. I would love to know whats causing this and what i can do to fix it......any suggerstions/advice is greatly appriciated.

First and foremost awesome post.  The question I have is how do you tell if the lawmen chasing you are marshals (for a certain achievement ;) ).  Other than that this has been amazingly useful thank you.

For those curious about my question...You can tell they are US Marshals because in the upper left hand corner (on PS3) it tells you that the US Marshals caught your trail.  Thankfully this happened randomly in Blackwater so I got my achievement done.  It then happened a few more times while I was attempting to get up to a 5000 dollar bounty...So maybe they are tied with Blackwater?

Special Forces always come and groups of four I think. Plus I don't know if they have a visual difference or not... They are tougher and I'm thinking they might be harder to lose, bigger visual circle?

Aaahh...I was wondering why my bounty dropped. The doing bounty mission thing seems pretty much to be the deal there! Thanks for pointing that out. I had a nice fight with one gang and a bounty hunter squad on the Ridgewood farm yesterday. LMAO. Raised my bounty by 1000$ within half a minute! :D

Good question? I actually don't know since it's a petty crime you'de have to do it a bunch of times before a witness would turn you in though. Curious if it's like shooting a door or on a house or knocking something over... Hmmm

After playing through the game mainly being a good guy (for convenience, really -- better deals in stores, and the law really overlooks a lot of the smaller crimes I commit like stealing horses when I need a ride)... I finally put on my bandana and took a run at the trophy you get for using a pardon letter to clear a $5000 bounty. It was good fun to really let it rip.

By that time, my fame/honor had reached such a level that the only way I could get in trouble with the law was by murdering somebody. Which means, really, the game forced me to go on horrible killing sprees there. Very reminiscent of my old favorite GTA pastime of scouting good places to have shootouts with the cops.

I have to say, Blackwater is a great place for padding the bounty on your head. You can climb a fire escape to gain the high ground advantage, and all the roofs are connected so you can run up and down a whole row of buildings as you fight the cops (there's even one spot where there's a gap between buildings and you can actually clear it by jumping, which was bad-ass). Or you can camp out by the fire escape, throwing fire bottles at the cops whenever they come up. But the saloon was actually the best place to hole up for a long shootout. All the entrances are in one room so they can't really sneak up on you, and you can mow them down as they come upstairs to your bedroom (interestingly, they don't appear to let you save the game in your bedroom when a living cop is in the room with you).
