Can we conclude a time frame for the release (assuming it's Red Dead) for the game fom this? One year? Two? Are there reference points we can use from other game developers? How long before they released their final product did they hire game testers?

In my experience, testing is the begining of the home stretch since the game's core development has reached a point that it functions properly. Testers then begin to break the game in many different ways, and report anything they succeeded in exploiting. EA for example releases it sports titles annually and has testers begin their work 6 months or so before release, but those games are way less intricate than a Rockstar type open world game so if i had to guess I'd say they'll need an entire year to debug one of their games. So lets add a 6 month hiring process to a year's worth of testing and refining and we have a release date of November 24th, 2017. Sounds reasonable, although Rockstar seems to prefer spring releases so spring of 2018 is their penciled in target. 8 years after the last one, hopefully we wont have to wait until 2026 for the successor to that title.

I'm sure they don't just hire testers for the end stretch. They would have testers all the time during the development life cycle, and this hiring could simply be replacing a member of staff who has left the company. Of course, it could also be they are hiring many more in preparation for the final phase of alpha testing. The only ones who really know would be those inside the San Diego studio.

If we are to play the hope card, and this is indeed for the end of development testing than I would say a year wouldn't be out of the question. Spend the rest of this year testing and tweaking before adding the shine to it for a release in 12 months time. In the meantime they can use trailers in the back half of this year to hype up the game.
It could very well be sooner, like what Bethesda has done with Fallout 4 last year but Rockstar have always been so sure of creating its own path instead of following anothers.

They better test if the coaches float! Otherwise, it's back to the drawing board ;)

They announced a couple of more jobs offers this weekend. One for a Game Tester (again), and an Administrative Assistant.

They've also had offerings for a UI Programmer and an Analytics DBA over the past week.

Pretty sure on two things.

a) You probably have to live and work in San Diego. Not an easy commute for an Aussie.
b) You probably would have to sign a NDA, so you couldn't leak info without huge consequences.

Maybe later. I have work tomorrow.

Another job offer went up today. Junior Data Analyst. They've been steadily adding more and more jobs. Even with the assumption that some people are leaving it still points to activity ramping up the past 6 months. What does that mean?
Probably nothing at all.
