Do not read if you don't want to hear a negative opinion
« on: October 26, 2018, 03:04:12 PM »
So far, I've played 6 hours of RDR2. To my own surprise, I'm not in love with it.

Why?

Disclaimer: I switched to Free Aim before I even started the first mission. It's how I played the original, that's how I play this one.

- Aiming feels clunky. Kills don't feel satisfying. Guns feel somewhat powerless to me.
- Reviewers praise the realism. I only see weird looking dogs, bears and horses
- From a purely visual point of view, I feel like the horses are a downgrade. Their eyes are freaky, they move their hind legs as if they have clubfeet. And yes, some movement animations are pretty.
- All this getting dirty, having to eat, cleaning your horse - I thought I would like it, but I don't. To me, it's simply annoying.

Of course, I'll keep playing. Maybe my opinion changes as the game progresses and I become more familiar with everything.

I was fearing this. Reason I don't own a copy (yet)

I'm keen to know how MP is going to be. It might be a decider for me.

You’ve played more than me so have more to base your opinion on, but I disagree with all points at this moment in time.

At the risk of sounding like a fanboy, I think the horses look great, aiming feels nice and the kills feel very satisfying.

I haven’t bothered washing, eating or cleaning my horse yet so will have to withhold judgement on that, but can see how it will just become a chore.

For your controls, try setting deadzone to zero and acceleration to maximum.

The only thing that I’m not keen on so far is Arthur’s voice. It’s overly husky for my liking.

Husky definition:(of the voice) having a semiwhispered vocal tone; somewhat hoarse, as when speaking with a cold or from grief or passion.

Agree with you there. It's the one thing that stood out to me in the trailers. It's forced and obviously not the actors natural voice. The dialouge sounds stilted and annoying at times.

I think with all the maintenance you have to do for Arthur and your horse, it will lessen as you progress further.  At least I hope...that's my theory.

Maybe for now you will have to maintain your cores until they are completely maxed out. Once they are maxed out, maybe you will only have to do minor maintenance thereafter.

There are also perks to unlock listed somewhere...that will probably make things easier as you progress.

The eating, etc isn't as bad as I thought it would be.  Since you carry so much in your satchel, you always have food available for you and your horse.  You can cook food and stow it for later too, if you want to eat "on the road".
This sure beats milking cows!

I'm now 25% through the game and have played around 20 hours.

Former complaints update:

- Aiming feels clunky... Update: If you play Free Aim, you have to do a lot of tweaking in the settings, like Alphapug said. When moving, it's best to fire from the hips. Once you've figured it out and get better guns, it's quite fun.

- From a purely visual point of view, I feel like the horses are a downgrade... Update: I still feel that way a little bit, but they make up for it with realistic movement animations.

- All this getting dirty, having to eat, cleaning your horse - I thought I would like it, but I don't... Update: Like DangerGirl said, since you're always stacked, you don't really have to do much, if you don't want to. Still buying shitloads of hay and horse food from the stables though. And once you've reached level 4 bonding with your horse, you can stop all the patting and brushing shit.

The bonding is really rewarding, I have to say. I feel like John Wick with his puppy when someone shoots my horse. First thing I do when I get into a fight is tell my horse to flee. It would be great if you could get the stats for your horse all the way up to elite no matter what breed it is. My main is a Sooty Buckskin Dutch Warmblood. They seem to be quite rare and I honestly don't want to switch later.

First thing I do when I get into a fight is tell my horse to flee.

I did this twice, and within 5 minutes of me doing it both times I got a message saying my horse had died. Once I was waaaaay out in the middle of no-where and had to walk it back to within whistling range. Pain in the ass stuff. Granted both times I was only on level 2 of bonding, so maybe that's why. But I don't trust not being able to tie up my horse.

You can tie up your horse if you are out in the wilderness.  Ride up next to a tree and it should give you the "hitch" option to hit "Y".

I feel like I have to brush my horse a bit too often for my liking, I was kind of expecting that to be one of the optional 'immersion' activities to be honest. Not too bad though. However, I don't have to feed my horse very often. I'm pretty ginger with pushing it to max speed though.

I love it.

Everytime I get that dang message to brush or run the horse through water because he's too dirty I just run into the river near base camp.

Haven't played the game, but that was my sense from the trailers too. Sounds a bit too forced.

Did they get all the original voice actors back?
Does Mexico feature at all? The mexican missions in RDR1 were excellent. Just when you felt like you'd got the landscape sussed, a whole new country was opened up. Those missions were crazy too. De Santa, the rebels, the president. The storyline seems even better in hindsight.

John and Dutch's VAs are the same as the first one, I can't tell for anyone else.

No Mexico unfortunately. I was pretty disappointed by that as well. But the new additions to the map are good nonetheless.
