My first impressions of online
« on: November 28, 2018, 11:54:21 AM »
Intro is tedious and uneccesary, should be optional.

Controls are clunky, running is awkward, and moving with a rifle in hand is even more so. One skill that still remains similar is deadeye, although the shots are way slower.  Switching shoulders is back which is helpful but more awkward as you have to do it while aiming.  The map boundaries in pvp really come at the worst time.  I’m getting the feel for headshots...they aren’t bad but there’s definitely a difference.

More to come

Apparently in pvp If you run out of ammo it doesn’t refill when you die or even next match.  Guess you have to buy some?

Wait, what? There no ammo refills during games AND no ammo resets for new games? So you have to start a gang match with ammo acquired from free roam / single player?

I haven't played yet, but if this is accurate MP is going to be a huge flop.

You should expect boundaries in competitive matches..... scaled down to small areas for 10 minute matches.

that why free roam is the place to be, Do and Go where you like..... no timers.

Free Roam posse wars are BACK!!!  shouting, screaming, crying, bad language.

Agreed, did GTA V have a similar system? That’s concerning.

You can buy it between matches, and you do earn money in each match, but you have to be quick.  They start fast.

And it’s possible there’s a way to refill ammo in match I haven’t discovered yet.

You can pick up other rifles but they disappear when you die, leaving you with an empty rifle.  Your pistol will have six shots if you die with it empty, but that doesn’t do much

Deadeye reloading is no longer a thing - if you only have one shot before reloading it will only paint one marker.

Think it did, you had to prepurchase the ammo in free roam or lobby.
Been playing a few hours now, so have a small idea of what it’s like.
For a start, character creation is terrible. Like, truly terrible. I tried to copy a character I saw online, but it I couldn’t get it the same for some reason. It seems like the model you get at the start or any other randomize characters are the basis for any character you create? So if you choose a certain face, it will still be based on some of the features that the random character had. Having looked through about 200 randomized characters, there all terrible, but I did manage to make the character I wanted  after about 2 hours. Hopefully they add some better customization
Then into the tutorial, took about 30/40 mins, and was pretty fun so I was happy with that. Most of the free roam aspects seem pretty cool, like the camp system etc seem really cool. Didn’t spend too long in there though and went straight to shootout.
Seems to be a good variety of game modes. Time between matches is quick, which great considering how long they took in GTAV. I’ve enjoyed them, but not as much as the original so far. They do seem a bit clunky. You start matches with weapons already owned as opposed to the ones given to you for certain maps.
Maps seem huge, tumbleweed is twice the size it was in the old one, with really far away spawns. In the Valentine map, I spent no time on the Main Street, all of the action was in the surrounding fields. I’m not nearly as good as I was before, and havent done well in any of them so far, but I’m still really enjoying them. The only thing is, and maybe this is just me, I just can’t imagine the gang and team death matches ever being as exciting and fun as they were in red dead, like in Tesoro Azul. I hope so, but I just can’t see it, yet anyway.
Some other minor nitpicks, matches don’t start with duels, and I was playing a match in tumbleweed and the same tune was playing for 10 minutes.
Overall though I am enjoying it a lot, and bear in mind that it is a beta, and they are taking feedback and suggestions on there website.

That's what I was looking for myself. I hate to say it, but I'm not enjoying my first impressions right now. I was hoping that I could do story missions by myself or with friends only. I don't like randoms or assholes shooting you when you are trying to figure things out and make money.

First, where are the "like" buttons? I wanna like some of ya'll posts...

I likely won't be able to play until Friday, but what I'm hearing and seeing in videos already posted is a bit disheartening. The greatest thing about RDR1 was the "pickup and play" ability of the gang matches. There seems there is just too much stuff that NEEDS to be done in order to be on level footing with others in gang matches. This was the exact reason I hated Max Payne. I always felt at a disadvantage in MP games. All I wanna do is turn on the game, and play 2 hours of bag games (I cannot believe they did not include them), not HAVE to do 1 hour of other things so I'm properly outfitted to survive some of these matches.

Cup half full: Even more of reason to go knife only in these games.

Keep in mind it's a beta.
Plus they could've overlooked some things, and need to be reminded to fix (insert words).

I'm hopeful they'll add something like a PvE Lobby personally. I detailed my comment on the other forums, I'll copy paste later after I get back.

In fairness, in its current state you can go straight into shootouts from the main title screen, but it does look like you’ll need to get weapons to a good level in free roam if you want to do well in them

I think I fixed the like problem

Yes, and while I haven’t tried the knife yet, a lot of the pvp game types are based on points, not kills.  And you get more points for getting kills with harder weapons.   For example a rifle gets one point, a tomahawk gets 7.  I’ll investigate the knife as soon as I can. :)

For anyone who has played shootouts, would it be fair to say the it plays more like GTAV death matches than Red Dead deaths Matches?
BTW, something I thought I’d hate but didn’t. Thought the diving mechanic is pretty good. I like it a lot
