Title: News of the day
Post by: Alphapug on April 12, 2012, 09:59:49 AM
This thread is for interesting, funny or thought-provoking news stories. Let's avoid overtly political stuff and save big stories for dedicated threads.

Here's a start.

Interesting, and the full report might explain things better, because otherwise there's quite a leap of logic involved! Good find though.

By Bo Gu, NBC News
BEIJING Overseas tourists often find the menus here befuddling, for good reason.
After all, what Westerner has experience with foods like these? Cowboy leg, Hand-shredded ass meat, Red-burned lion head, Strange flavor noodles, Blow-up flatfish with no result, or Tofu made by woman with freckles.
As proud as the Chinese people are of their thousands of years of gastronomic culture, even a Chinese native can feel disoriented when going to another province, given all the different styles of cooking. Many of the food names, often unique to different provinces, get lost in translation, especially in booming cities starting to embrace overseas tourists.
Advertise | AdChoices

With few English speakers, restaurants usually translate their menus word by word directly from an English-Chinese dictionary. Or they just Google the Chinese characters. A photo that made the rounds online a few years ago got a chuckle from a lot of people: a restaurant with a large page not found sign above its door as its English name.
But the Beijing Municipal government hopes to end such unintended jokes with its new guidebook intended for the public and restaurants alike, Enjoy Culinary Delights: The English Translation of Chinese Menus.
The effort began in 2006 with a Beijing speaks English campaign. By the 2008 Summer Olympics, officials had created a draft guide with translations for major restaurants to meet the demand for arriving athletes and tourists.
After 2008, we felt like the book was in a good demand, so we kept working on it and collected more menus. Finally we translated over 2,000 Chinese dish names, said Xiang Ping, deputy chief of the Beijing speaks English committee, in an interview with NBC News.

The cover of the new guidebook, "Enjoy culinary delights: the English translation of Chinese menus," that hopes to make it easier for foreigners to make sense of restaurant menus in Beijing.

Some of the dishes kept their original names, which people familiar with Chinese food may understand: jiaozi, baozi, mantou, tofu or wonton.
Some more complicated dishes come with both Chinese pronunciations and explanations: fotiaoqiang (steamed abalone with sharks fin and fish maw in broth); youtiao (deep-fried dough sticks); lvdagunr (glutinous rice rolls stuffed with red bean paste),
and aiwowo (steamed rice cakes with sweet stuffing).
Chen Lin, a 90-year-old retired English professor from Beijing Foreign Language University, was the chief consultant for the book.
He told NBC News that about 20 other experts like English teachers and professors, translators, expats who have lived in China for a long time, culinary experts and people from the media helped develop the final version.
So next time you're in Beijing and you are confronted with a menu item like "hand shredded ass meat," hopefully you can crack open the book to get some guidance. It means "hand shredded donkey meat."

Awarding it to organizations is dumb.  What, the world doesn't have any deserving individuals?  Sure, sure its largely just a politicized award now-a-days but really.  Significant portions of the world have been at war for the last 11 years.  You can't tell me there's not an individual who's done more to promote peace than whatever the EU's done, none of which I'm aware of.

I agree 100%.
The Nobel Peace Prize should go to the average citizen of the world that during his/her lifetime worked, payed taxes, committed no crimes and had to put up with all those filthy politicians that are now awarding themselves for doing fuck all.

The European union only existed since 1993, your argument is flawed. They established a lot of good relations between eastern and western european countries, strengthened the democracy of many countries.
Scandinavian countries (who give the prizes away) have had a lot of criticism on the EU but still they recognize its efforts.

You can criticize the actions of many European countries (= pre European Union) throughout history but don't say that the actual EU has done "fuck all" because that's just being plain ignorant to the facts.

And since the EU got sucked in the economic crisis, a little encouragement and a bit of recognition for its good actions are more than welcome, it's just sad to read all of this.

They considered the last 60 years for the prize cause the EU actually started in the 50's as EC.

As for the EU doing anything for peace, well sorry about that but the EU has done much more for war than for peace.
Of course being yourself, I suppose, someone that has never lived in some of the places that were bombed by European planes you certainly have a flawed point of view.
Basically the typical point of view of a spoiled citizen that lives in a bubble of mainstream media lies and enjoys a comfortable war-free life.
Don't worry and don't get me wrong. The majority is like that...
Ask the people of Belgrade if they enjoyed being bombed by the other "peaceful" fellow Europeans or take a walk in any of the cities around the world in which Europeans are in a way or another involved in bloody and disgraceful conflicts. After you've done that then maybe you'll get a clue about what reality is. Cause right now, sorry to tell you this, you ain't got one.

It's just sad to see that powerful lies stick to naive and uninformed minds.

There's only one fact here. It's hypocritical to give a prize for peace to an organization that is currently involved in a war.
Cause you know that NATO and EU are basically the same, right?

Anyway, it's not the first time they fuck up with this prize.
As Val said it's just a politicized price.
I'm sure Mr Nobel wouldn't approve though. ;)

You're still looking besides the point. the EU is indeed wrapped up in several conflicts but out of all the world governments they have done the biggest efforts in bringing peace to several regions, even regions outside Europe. This is an undeniable fact!

Saying that NATO and the EU are basically the same is just preposterous and shows that it is you who is misinformed in the end.

If you like that then give it to Russia for all their good works. The EU is facing some tough times carring all that dead Weight lets see how they act in 5-10 yrs.
So giving it to the EU is like giving it to Obama, asinine.

I see your point and I won't deny that the EU may have done some good at times (even though like in all things political "doing good = taking care of its own interests in the process") but in the end of the day to win a Nobel prize you should be all for peace and not just part time for peace and part time for war. It's a contradiction and it's hypocritical.
They should have given it to a deserving individual rather than to a political organization that is not completely innocent when it comes to war and peace.

Most of the EU countries are part of the NATO. The NATO it's their armed organization (that includes the US of course).
NATO is a cold war creature that shouldn't exist anymore. It's used by the EU when they don't want to get its hands dirty directly so they hide under the NATO flag.
But the decisions about NATO missions are made by the same governments that are in the EU.
NATO was created with a defensive purpose and yet it has been used recently in conflicts that has nothing to do with defense.
And it has been used to bomb a major European capital and its people: Belgrade.

Anyway, I respect your opinion. Sorry if I sounded harsh in some posts. Nothing personal of course.
I just dislike the hypocrisy attached to this prize decision.

Great decision on both states.  The Republican party should be supporting this decision 100% and put it in their party platform.  Its always been confusing to me why they haven't because for a party that's pro-individual freedom, uh, how'd you miss this one guys?  Democrats of course would oppose it because it creates a new, unregulated industry of free enterprise.  But hopefully these state laws put pressure on the federal government to remove the federal law next.  Me thinks it'll take quite a few more state law changes first before its enough pressure though.

So much sensationalizing right there, hah. This generation definitely isn't the last but we are seeing a shift in gaming culture thanks to the ready availability of casual gaming on mobile devices. I don't think it's inherently bad either way, the hardcore niche will always remain but in the mean time video games become a more available media for the population and as a result there is more innovation in what defines a game. It's the beautiful result of culture and no amount of butthurttery is going to stop it.

Also, totes on Colorado and Washington legalizing it. Fun fact: Colorado had more votes for Marijuana legalization than votes for Obama. Suck it, democrats. I was planning on moving to Colorado as it was but now I'm just too excited for the opportunity to begin a business in an emerging industry that will be as lucrative as marijuana. Heh.

I read a different article last week stating that Minecraft overtook COD as the most played game on XBL in October.  The issue isn't per se whether gaming consoles will still exist but whether the big companies will adjust to market demand, or whether they'll lag behind.  I'm sure some will do each and the laggers will go out of business.

Oh well, just look at Midway Games.  Maybe if they're ass had done something besides making 19 Mortal Kombat games in 19 years they'd still be in business.  Bet they had hella good market research guiding their decisions /sarcasm

In other news no more Twinkies.  Hostess is shutting down operations because a couple of union reps feel its unfair that a bankrupt company could pay them a slightly smaller salary in order to stay competitive.  In exchange they shall prove their point by putting all of their union members into unemployment.  Be a great day for America when the final union manufacturing plant is closed.  And some wonder why union membership in America is doing this:

This is going to vastly fuck up my zombie apocalypse diet plan.

On another note its not relevant if union had taken past concessions because it still pays more than unemployment and i don't imagine job prospects are good for bakers now a days.   Unions have driven the cost of manufacturing  thru the roof while the company bore those costs for years and suffered gradual decline because of it.  So one can't say for a small fractional period of time that they'r paid less than they deserve when they're still being paid more than the market will bear.  If they weren't over paid hostess would be making that product at a profit not a loss.

Let's all rejoice, it is a rare day indeed when any government becomes less intrusive in any way.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/18/travel/tsa-body-scanners/index.html?c=homepage-t

TSA removing 'strip search'

Washington (CNN) - Airport body scanners that produce graphic images of travelers' bodies will be removed from checkpoints by June, the Transportation Security Administration says, ending what critics called "virtual strip searches."

Passengers will continue to pass through machines that display a generic outline of the human body, raising fewer privacy concerns.

The TSA move came after Rapiscan, the manufacturer of the 174 so-called "backscatter" machines, acknowledged it could not meet a congressional-ordered deadline to install privacy software on the machines.

Anyone watch the State of the Union?  I missed it but I watched it on youtube this morning.  Gag me with a fucking spoon.  Every single item he mentioned was a call for government to do something by expanding into some new area.  Every single one of them was 'do something for the sake of doing something' without any reason why at all behind any of them....

like "we need to repair the aging infastructure".  Eh?  Didn't we have some huge stimulus / bailout bill of billions of dollars to do that already?

Mostly for me it was all the rambling from Obama about calls for government spending in order to create broad economic growth.  Yeah cuz... you know.. you already added more to the national debt than all the other Presidents combined in just 4 years.  If government spending was going to make us prosperous the whole nation would be freaking millionaires by now.  Well that worked well, let's do more of that...

Did you know Congress passed some law in the 80s eliminating tax deductions for business expenses if you sold drugs to make it so coke dealers couldn't decide to pay taxes and claim their guns and speed boats as legit business expenses... At least that was the theory.

Like all government intervention in free markets its had unintended bad consequences.  I read an article today on the impact this law is having on medicinal marijuana dispensaries.  These guys are paying between 50%-75% effective tax rates because they can't claim their payroll, office rent our anything else as a tax deduction unlike every other business in America.  Fucking ridiculous.  Some industries like construction you can have $90,000 on expense to make a $10,000 profit.  Can you imagine making $10K and having to pay taxes on $100k?

That's government stifling innovation.

My point was Muslims are very big on beheadings for whatever reason.  I've posted probably a half dozen news pieces over the course of time about various beheadings of innocents.  Most of them were women who someone decided dishonored something by reading a book or riding a bike ornot marrying so&so, or going to college, or dating a boy or some thing or another.  I've posted a few articles about stonings too as those are... not quite as common as the good ol' fashioned beheading... but prevalent never-the-less.  Thank your lucky stars you were born in the 1st world kids (seedy)

You have to remember that Christians used to do the same type of things. Most first world born Muslims don't act like that. So "westernize" the country's culture to at least some degree and that would go away. Over time of course.

Or just get rid of Religion somehow. Both seem like equally plausible alternatives.

When incidents of this nature become common place in certain countries then of course the worldwide media stop reporting them so frequently.

It's very uncommon on the other hand for a British soldier to be murdered & beheaded in London so therefore will make headlines.

I am not wondering why it made the headlines, I am more just saying why I "don't care" I guess. Yea it is unfortunate but I see it just as I see all the killings everywhere else. When there is some natural disaster that kills 100 people I don't get upset, I am not going to donate to a relief fund. Then people think I am some evil nazi or something. But I treat it just as they treat the 33 killed in suicide bombings in Iraq.

I'm ranting, but you get the point.

It doesn't have as much to do with being Muslim as much as it does the local culture, it's rare in countries like Iran or Malaysia but more common in certain Arab countries, among the Pashtuns and certain African countries both Christian and Muslim. That or being used as intimidation in warzones, like Mexico.

I somewhat agree, somewhat disagree.  I've made that same point to people on here in the past, mostly Vlad, that Islam the religion is not the same thing as the race of being Arab.  However the issue I have that prevents me from agreeing completely is that we have about 50 majority Muslim countries.  Some are African, some are Asian, some are middle eastern.  But we see sharia law practiced in every region.  We see stonings in Indonesia and beheadings, and hanging till dead for carrying 7ounces of weed, etc.

Next Topic: Stockholm Immigration Riots.

Of course sharia is practiced in some countries, why wouldn't Islamic laws or laws based on Islamic law be used in Islamic countries?  But saying sharia is practiced in every region is false, Turkey, Azerbaijan, the Palestinian Authority, Syria (nominally), most of the African Muslim countries, and the Central Asian countries except for Afghanistan don't practice sharia and have secular government. Beheadings are rare outside of Saudi Arabia or tribal areas or, again as forms of intimidation in war zones. That said, religious conservatism has some blame for violence in third world countries.

Beheadings are illegal in Indonesia and are used by crazies in extrajudicial killings.

If someone really believes that then do you think some random dude on the internet is going to make them change their opinion? Plus it is more likely to be sarcasm then an actual belief on the internet. If you really wanted to look into it, all it would take is a quick glance at his previous posts to determine that he was, indeed, being sarcastic.

NSA did what they did, and that's honestly a proof that almost any countries in the world have agreements between each others. On any stuffs countries would do, they would always be people to criticize, to complain, or to enphasize the problem, but in the end, who cares ?

Honestly, even if we were completely spied by the security agencies, or if the private bankers such as Rotschield or rockfeller and all those guys were secretly controlling the world, or even if what some people say about obama being a CIA agent, obama and Ben laden being the same guys etc even if all those things were true, how could we know ? ^^

Anyways, knowing the power those organisations have, I think that what was spread into the news was the things they accepted to show. They definitely have enough power to keep control on what they want to show.

Everyone calls their beliefs "truth" so that doesn't really mean anything.

Also, in this country, if you go looking for trouble you'll find it. Zimmerman created the situation when he decided to follow Trayvon, against the advise of the 911 operator. Zimmerman wanted to play hero and a kid who wasn't doing anything wrong lost his life.

Yet you bought into the article you posted when the worst your source uses for it's character assassination is that he took a picture of a gun, spray painted some lockers, smoked weed and used the n word (which a huge chunk of not only black people, but people in general use in casual context). Hell, they used flipping off the camera, and getting tattoos. What a laughable article from a laughable source. Are we gonna see Conservapedia articles next?

If you were being followed in the night by some weirdo, especially when you're away from home, would your first thought be that he was neighborhood watch or that he meant to mug you? Would you sit and wait for him to come to you? Martin would have been perfectly reasonable to think his life would have been in danger. Had Trayvon lived and Zimmerman died, Trayvon would have been within his rights to invoke the Stand Your Ground Law just as Zimmerman was perfectly within his right to claim self-defense, but in Zimmerman's case, he started the conflict so he was in the wrong.

Also his friend heard him say "I don't know some cracker mofo" so he reacted as such and figured he could just run up on him real fast beat him down and make it back to dad's.

He my have created the situation but martin escalated it by attacking him. If he was just the average kid going to get candy and snacks why was someone calling 911 and following him? Not just cause he was black.

Actually, Zimmerman escalated the conflict by following him (against the dispatchers orders). If he actually knew how to be a neighborhood watchman, he would have called the police and not got out to confront Trayvon, and you obviously know nothing of racial profiling.

The vehicle, made by Honda for Top Gear magazine, goes from 0-60mph (95km/h) in roughly four seconds.

OCALA, Fla. (CBS Tampa) – A Marion County man who is facing charges of sexual activities involving animals is challenging the constitutionality of laws banning such activities.

According to the Gainesville Sun, 32-year-old Carlos Romero filed a motion requesting that the judge overseeing his case declare an existing Florida statute that bans sex or sexual activities involving animals unconstitutional.

He and the assistant public defenders assigned to the case reportedly claimed that the statute impedes on Romero’s due process rights.

“By making sexual conduct with an animal a crime, the statute demeans individuals like Defendant (Romero) by making his private sexual conduct a crime,” the attorneys were quoted as additionally noting by the newspaper.

The offending statute also violates a part of the Fourteenth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution by “personal liberty and autonomy when it comes to private intimate activities,” according to documents filed by Romero’s attorneys and obtained by the Sun.

Florida’s statute reportedly prohibits any and all zoophilic acts, which is why Romero and his defenders feel it violates the Equal Protection Clause.

“The personal morals of the majority, whether based on religion or traditions, cannot be used as a reason to deprive a person of their personal liberties,” the documents stated, according to the Sun. “If the statute were to require sexual conduct with animals to be nonconsensual or to cause injury in order to be a crime, then perhaps the State would have a rational basis and legitimate state interest in enforcement.”

They added, “The classification of zoophilic acts as first-degree misdemeanors is grossly out of proportion to the severity of zoophilic acts. [T]he only possible rational basis for the statute is a moral objection to sexual acts considered deviant or downright ‘disgusting,’?”

Romero was first arrested in August after getting caught engaging in sex acts with Doodle, a female miniature donkey.

Romero is facing a first-degree misdemeanor charge of sexual activities involving animals, which if convicted, could result in a year in jail. Romero and his legal representation also allegedly feel that this punishment is excessive, and would qualify as cruel and unusual punishment.

Romero had reportedly been offered a plea deal which would involve a year of probation, a $200 fine and other mandates, including not being allowed to own pet sand submitting to psychosexual evaluation and STD testing, among other items.

Chemical attack in Damascus, Syria on August 21st.

GRAPHIC IMAGES IN LINKS.

Quote
"Scores of men, women and children were killed outside Damascus on Wednesday in an attack marked by the telltale signs of chemical weapons: row after row of corpses without visible injury; hospitals flooded with victims, gasping for breath, trembling and staring ahead languidly; images of a gray cloud bursting over a neighborhood.

But even with videos, witness accounts and testimonies by emergency medics, it was impossible to say for certain how many people had been killed and what exactly had killed them. The rebels blamed the government, the government denied involvement and Russia accused the rebels of staging the attack to implicate President Bashar al-Assad’s government.

Images of death and chaos poured out of Syria after what may be the single deadliest attack in more than two years of civil war. Videos posted online showed dozens of lifeless bodies, men wrapped in burial shrouds and children, some still in diapers. There were hospital scenes of corpses and the stricken sprawled on gurneys and tile floors as medics struggled to resuscitate them."

We might have ourselves a new element. Or at least, have enough evidence to make an already discovered one official.

Here’s what they said they know:
- You are “super-heavy.” But with 115 protons in your atomic nucleus, how could you not be?
- You are unstable. When they made you in a German research facility, you began to decay in a fraction of a second.
- You have secrets to tell about the “structure and properties” of the nucleus at the center of atoms of super-heavy elements like you. Details will be revealed shortly in a paper published in the journal Physical Review Letters.

I'll give you some real news. Giant eel fish corpse invasion on Californian shores! Officials do their best to hold the attack with cardboard tanks. (http://news.msn.com/science-technology/another-oarfish-carcass-found-on-california-coast)

Could this possibly be similar to that of the many bodies of bottlenose dolphins found on the eastern coast of the United States? Who the fuck knows. But it's better news than politics and Ferguson.

It doesn't matter if it is Townhall, CNN, Fox, whatever you use. What matters is the issue being presented, if the issue can be disproven then it shouldn't matter. Not that I am saying he disproved it because I didn't look at anything.

What exactly do you mean by this? This would be like saying that the US is losing it's 'identity' because of the large amount of immigrants from Mexico that we have.

A majority of the countries in western Europe model themselves after us; as a "melting pot", full of immigration. This doesn't mean that they are losing their customs/traditions/whatever you were implying that they are losing.

There aren't many options, really. And the US isn't the only place that is like this. Looking at Australia, the US, the UK, and Canada, all have a shit ton of immigrants, legal and illegal.

I'm not a conservative or a nationalist, you know this. But when I walk around cities like Paris or Brussels (cities i know very well), I can't help but think that something has gone terribly wrong.

Everywhere you look there are mosques rising out the ground. Reports of radical islamic preachers everywhere. Crime rates rising at an awesome rate. The immigrant youth is getting more homophobic instead of less. Integration is declining. The problem is spreading to every major city in West europe.

Fuck you guys. Europe IS losing its identity. Being a hardcore nationalist is just moronic. But being a hardcore globalist when things are actually getting worse because of the immigration is even more moronic.

Since I am not from Europe I can't access it myself, so I must rely on facts and facts alone. If you can't back it up don't expect anyone to change their opinion.

Do you just want me to believe you and everyone else without questioning their motives or critical thinking skills? This is the problem, people never question anything.

And of course I am the bad one because I actually want some evidence. Some proof. God damn.

live in bubbles until fools start ripping the cords here in the US. A couple of meat puzzles will get you to change your opinion. Anywhere on the globe where Islam takes a major foothold, you will have people who take the quran and the hadiths literally. Hence, the manifestation of slaughter on the infidels. This my friends is fact. You can study the Armenian genocide, or The grand mufti of Jerusalem teaming with Hitler out of hatred for Jews and controlling Balkan muslim army in world war 2. BS! tHIS IS NOT RACISEM ebola doesn't care what color you are. This was done per plan there are four strains of ebola named for the regions they came from what we are seeing now is not one of them cause the real thing is much worse what we have here is a weaponized version of it made by the US, China or USSR. it was reliesed in Afirca and brought here by the lack of boarder seciurty to Texas which is 50% of the US econamy once it falls and they have to qurinteen large cities then they will declare martial law and the people will be scared shitless and will go along with it, and that boys and girls is how Obola is going to stay in power. And also where do you think this intro virius thing that is killing our babies in 47 states came from? The little desiesed alians that they spread across the country without telling anyone.

Also since when are you guilty before being presumed innocent? I grew up in Ferguson what you got there is nothing short of a lynch mob,
M. Brown and T. Martin were nothing but monsters think god they got taken out before they hurt some innocent person that was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. By no means am I on the popo side but you got a bunch of fake fucks running around out there being bussed in from out of state and being paid by the SEIU and AFMES fucks, Your baby was not an angle when are the blacks going to take responsabilty for them selves and be accountable for their actions?

Sorry for the spelling. Also I have had a spell of bad luck so I no longer have internet access so I am going to the library it may take me a minuet to respond.

It's not like the people who have DIED from the disease-who you don't seem to care about because you think you're better than them- got it on purpose. The virus probably only started in West Africa because they live in worse conditions than us, due to being poor.Thats only because they've been continuously exploited/colonialised by the powerful countries like France, England and were taken as slaves by Americans.

Coronation Street's Anne Kirkbride dies

Coronation Street star Anne Kirkbride, who played the character Deirdre Barlow in the long-running television soap, has died aged 60 after a short illness.

In a statement, ITV said her husband David Beckett confirmed she passed away peacefully in a Manchester hospital.

He and the programme's cast and crew were said to be "heartbroken and deeply saddened".

Coronation Street executive producer Kieran Roberts said: "We feel blessed and honoured to have known her."

He added: "There are no words to describe the sense of grief we feel at Anne's passing. We know only too acutely how much Anne meant to the millions of people who watched her create the legendary character of Deirdre Barlow.

"She will be greatly missed by the Coronation Street team who share happy memories of working with her. Our thoughts are with David and their family."

Something big is kicking off.  ???

Grand Theft Auto firm sues BBC over Daniel Radcliffe film

Rockstar Games - maker of Grand Theft Auto - is suing the BBC over a drama called Game Changer.

The film stars Daniel Radcliffe as Sam Houser, the Briton behind the hit computer game series.
It's about the clash between the firm and a US lawyer, Jack Thompson, who wanted the violent games banned.
Rockstar Games wants to ensure its "trademarks are not misused in the BBC's pursuit of an unofficial depiction of purported events".
Mr Thompson believed he could prove a link between playing the games and violent crimes.

He attempted to sue Rockstar on several occasions but the judges ruled against him.
The film's script is based on David Kushner's 2012 book, Jacked: The Outlaw Story Of Grand Theft Auto. It is written by James Wood (also responsible for Rev), and directed by Owen Harris (who made Black Mirror and Misfits).
Hollywood star Bill Paxton plays Jack Thompson. Filming is already under way with its release scheduled for later this year.

In a statement to ign.com, Rockstar said: "Take-Two Interactive (Rockstar's parent company) has filed [a] suit against the BBC for trademark infringement based on their movie currently titled Game Changer as it relates to Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto video game series.
"While holders of the trademarks referenced in the film title and its promotion, Rockstar Games has had no involvement with this project.
"Our goal is to ensure that our trademarks are not misused in the BBC's pursuit of an unofficial depiction of purported events related to Rockstar Games.

"We have attempted multiple times to resolve this matter with the BBC without any meaningful resolution.
"It is our obligation to protect our intellectual property and unfortunately in this case litigation was necessary."
The BBC says it won't "comment on legal matters."

BBC are all like. We don't care.

I voted to remain because it was said that if I voted to leave the UK, the EU would kick me out. Now you lot voted to leave and I'm out of the EU anyway. There is no one to blame but Cameron and his Tory cronies.

Don't get me wrong, the EU governing bodies are unbelievably bad, but the only thing that Brexit will accomplish is corporate control over the UK & a damaged economy. There are still going to be twats running the country. It's an embarrassing day to be British...

I really don't want to get into a deep political discussion here as I've had it up to the neck over the past few weeks but what I will say is that you or nobody else knows what Bretix will accomplish because we're in unchartered waters and nobody can read the future.

Maybe our economy will go down the toilet, maybe it'll thrive. We can only wait and see. I certainly don't feel embarrassed to be British today or any other day for that matter.

That's one of my problems with Brexit, it seems silly to vote to do something with no idea how it will affect your country. I'm just a colonial though, so what do I know. I wish you guys the best.

Anybody who votes for anything does it with the hope that it will help to improve things. Nobody has a crystal ball to see into the future. Do you know for sure that your country will be in a better state once Trump is president and you've built your big wall? Of course you don't, you can only vote for him and keep your fingers crossed.

That's actually the parallel I was seeing with Brexit. So many want to vote for Trump because it is change and they assume that any change is good change. They want to buck the status quo and don't care how it happens, just that it does. It's a slippery slope I think.

I'm not much of a betting man though, I always tend to lean toward the safer option. I probably would have been a loyalist in the revolution...

Economy has already tanked. Scotland & Northern Ireland will leave. Farage has already gone back on promises he made. The EU are being a bunch of dickheads insisting the "divorce" is quick without thinking of the British market they could tap into.

I just do not understand how people think Farage & the Tories are any better than the EU lot... but hey that's democracy. I really do like seeing direct democracy in action, even when I don't agree with it.

I always tend to lean toward the safer option.

So you think Scotland will really leave this time? It won't be much of a United Kingdom without dear old Scotland. I am excited for all the flag changes though.

Definitely, in 2014 many people voted to stay due to fears of leaving the EU. And now, every single Scottish council (electoral area) voted to remain in the EU. The Scottish (and Northern Irish) people don't want to be dragged out of the EU against there will. This is the tipping point. I think Old England and Wales will be all that remains of the UK by 2020.

I hate to be that guy, but wouldn't the UK still include Ireland? It would be Great Britain only having England and Wales.

As much as I love the British flag and how its all set up, anything that reduces their Olympic games medal count is alright in my books. :P

I wonder if they get rid of the Union Jack, if Australia and New Zealand will follow in flag changes. It would be a little weird to still use the flag of a nation that doesn't exist anymore in the canton.  It will be an end to an age of beautiful flag designs.

I think it is an interesting development, I'm keen to see what will change and will be better and/or worse. It won't be easy though, as the UK is split up at 52 to 48%

Also read that in Scotland, a million people already signed a petition for another referendum to stay in the EU.

Apologies, I meant Northern Ireland. You think they will leave too? Join back up with the rest of Ireland or go it alone?

I think Scotland said they wanted another referendum, but is there a minimum time that has to have passed since the last one?

I know a lot of Northern Irish want to leave, not sure if the Republic of Ireland will take them. Haven't looked into it too much. I would be surprised if they went at it alone...

Yeah, the problem will be holding another referendum. Not sure how long it will take but if they can arrange one soonish, I think it'll be a landslide in favour.

There won't be a border poll in in Northern Iteland over the EU, of course Irish republicans will tell you otherwise , the Good Friday agreement outlines the circumstances of when a vote on a united Ireland is possible , put simply if the majority of the I population wishes to have such a vote, it looks unlikely as the majority of NI wants to remain part of the UK, if a border poll ever comes it will mark some of the worst civil unrest Europe has seen.

Ok so now we have a refugee who is going to OSU who must be a smart fellow which is great and I'm a little happy to help pay for his education since being a refugee I wouldn't think he had much wealth so he is upset about wanting to pray in public I'm assuming out on the grass somewhere that people who see him may become concerned or upset with it because you know it's not unreasonable to be concerned about Islamic members acting normal such as atinding a work party with co workers that recently just threw you a baby shower leave and come back and shoot the place up (San bernardino) so with his concern of how bystanders may view his devotion what does he do? He pulls the fire alarm and then runs his car into his fellow students and then gets out and attacks with a butcher knife!

Really?

And what is the call to help stop this?
Yes you guessed it more gun control lol and they wonder why they have the lowest party strangth since the 1920s when they were the party of the KKK

Rene Artois from Allo Allo died.

You got 'Allo 'Allo in the Netherlands? I loved the policeman, Officer Crabtree, turned out he was an underciver English man hence why he couldn't converse so well in the mock French language that they used on the show he had some great lines,

[René goes to the Gendarmerie (police station) as he continues to look for somewhere safe to hide from Denise Laroque. Watch this on YouTube]
René: Service! Is this a police station or a mortuary? (He rings the bell on the counter)
Crabtree: Would you please stop bonging the bill, or I shall lick you up for disturbing the puss.
René: Office Crabtree, it is I, René Artois (He removes his false beard). Will you lock me up, please?
Crabtree: Are you confessing to some cream?
René: Yes. Cream galore!
Crabtree: In that curse, you must fill in a foam. Here is a list of creams. I will tick what you have din. Murder?
René: No.
Crabtree: Minslaughter?
René: No.
Crabtree: Roop?
René: No.
Crabtree: Biglary?
René: No.
Crabtree: Biglary with minaces?
René: No.
Crabtree: Handbog snitching?
René: No.
Crabtree: Arsin?
René: What is "arsin"?
Crabtree: Setting fire to places.
René: Ah! My life is in danger, so I will confess to all of these things, as long as you lock me up.
Crabtree: I see. Unfortunately, all the sills are filled to caposity. Could you come back next woke?
René: Oh my God! Why do I pay rates?

A gentleman and a scholar Craigy.

I'm beginning to suspect that Aussies may like to gently humor a simple Yank like myself. For example, one once gave me some advice on how to make a trip to Oz more memorable. He said that blokes in the pub are very welcoming of my type and would even buy me a special drink if I follow the secret protocol. He said I just need to find the friendliest bloke, who would have the largest Ned Kelly tattoo and put my hand on his shoulder.

Then I should look him in the eye and say "Just chuck it in me dumper," and wink. He said the special drink was called "a bunch of fives."

Can confirm if you do that you will be given a bunch of fives.

However... (americans don't read the spoiler)
A bunch of fives isn't a drink but rather a punch. Probably to the face.

And yes, we Aussies love taking the piss out of Yanks. And that's not as weird as it sounds.

I don't know about you guys, but I think that Trump can be stopped by rolling out banners saying "Resist" & "Build bridges, not walls", or by kicking a few trash cans into the street. Throw in a bit of name calling and a few pink furry hats, that'll do it!

Meanwhile, the Romanians are doing it properly:

About 100 people protested here against Trump... with signs saying things like: "I disagree with you, Mr. Trump". That's gonna hurt, I'll bet he is gone in no time.

Logic & consistency.

Is the ban dumb? Hell yes. But I can understand why people are feeling a little "taken for granted" when thousands of liberals will get out on the street for a few travel restrictions, but don't protest deals like TTIP or CETA (I'm pretty sure most Americans haven't even heard about these two trade deals). This trade policy is what fuels people like Trump, Le Pen, Wilders, etc., but Democrats are far too many shortsighted to see this. They believe that for "geopolitical" reasons, trade deals like TTIP/CETA are needed, but they completely ignore that workers' rights get thrown out the window & foreign investors gain special legal privileges.

I mean, for fuck sakes, yes, protest the travel restriction, but can you really not see why people voted for (and continue to support) Trump? Dems are willing to get out on the street so that 7 nationalities can once again travel freely, but they plow full steam ahead with neoliberal shit like TPP, TTIP, CETA & TiSA.  For the lack of a better term: it is "aristocratic (or perhaps even privileged) protesting".

It's a shitty thing to say & I sound like a cock, but it needs to be said.

America is in dire need of a new left movement.

These protests are not organized by the democrats, these are normal citizens upset with a president who is either borderline retarded or a manipulative liar.

Like you said, no one knows what the hell the TPP is. Not even Trump supporters. All they saw was "trade" and "China" and Fox News saying it was bad. Maybe if Republicans actually started an information campaign about why these deals are bad for America more people would listen. But they didn't have to. They can just cry havoc and millions Americans will vote for whoever says they will get their jobs back. Yes, the Dems dropped the ball with the blue collar demographic but that is a complaint against the party which is clearly ran by idiots. You have to remember that many leftists DID try to get a proper liberal as the Democrat nominee but were blocked by party politics.

I think we agree on this, but just come to different conclusions.

So let's head to the DNC headquarters after this travel ban is sorted and protest there. I'd like to see that happen.

I get that it isnt a strictly Democrat thing, but almost all of them are using it as a publicity stunt: "look how inhumane Trump is and how passionate I am (BTW let's not talk about fucking Sanders over because that's not progressive)". And people buy this shit. The Democrats (like centre-left parties everywhere) need a major overhall and if they don't realise that soon, we're looking at a second trump/bannon circle jerk.

But what way do the Democrats go?Socialism is a dirty word in the USA, and most citizens equate it to communism light, I think they way to win back popular opinion is for the left to highlight their policies of inclusion, social justice and altruism, Hilary’s message was to muddled, was she liberal, right of centre? As an observer I wasn’t sure about Hilary’s stance on many subjects, and with Trump you knew exactly what we’re getting, this contrast only made people wary und untrusting of Hilary, it was as if she tried to trump Trump on some sort of sound bite showdown if you pardon the phrase, she was dragged down to a level of political mudslinging instead of focusing on the actual issues. Perhaps the Democrats needn’t do too much, give him enough rope and all that.

The pendulum is swinging to the right, but it will swing back around eventually. Although it probably won't come in 2018, they will take back at least part of congress eventually. We can only wait to see if if the democrats can come up with a decent candidate in 2020, since right now there is no obvious choice. Hopefully they figure themselves out though.

What America really needs is voting reform but I don't see that happening anytime soon.

I would like to see some kind of return to economic left wing principles within the Democrats in the US and centre-left within the EU. There's way too much focus on issues like immigration, abortion, guns, gays, race, etc.

For example: CETA, the EU-Canada trade deal was passed by the EU Parliament a few days ago (and broadly supported by centre-left groups), but these kind of policies increase income inequality and distrust of the "establishment". The worst part about CETA, the EU Parliament's own committee for Employment stated that this deal will cost the EU 200,000 small business jobs and endanger a further 90 million. Regardless, conservatives and liberals voted in favour, only the far-left, most of the greens & the far-right voted against it. This is the kind of shit that leaves people out to dry & pissed off. The left needs to harness that anger & use it rather than dismiss it. Bernie had it going for a little while, but now it seems to have lost most of its direction and meaning.

The "establishment" is fuelling euro-scepticism and nationalism and they don't realise that they're digging their own grave...

What bugs me most about this media piss-fest is that this is an issue that needs to be taken seriously. The msm has proven they are in the tank for the dims! And they and all Democrats are willing to destroy the republic for what? A lie, nobody wanted Trump and I don't think Russia helped or hindered either one, and I have no doubt that Obama surveillance of Trumps people for political reasons, they have shown time after time the willingness to change, break or circumvent the rules or the authority of any dept., court or standing principle and then cry foul when the other side does it.

Now Trump is being sued for inciting violence lol that is just funny

Gay baboon terrorises villagers in #SouthAfrica, rapes 5 men

Gay baboon terrorises villagers, rapes 5 men

Men at a village in the North West are leaving in fear over a big male baboon that likes to grope and bonk human males.

http://zimbabwe-today.com/gay-baboon-terrorises-villagers-in-southafrica-rapes-5-men/

The baboon is said to have attacked more than six men in the past week and what’s baffling the villagers is the fact that the baboon only attacks guys and does not hurt it’s victims but rather performs sexual acts on top of the terrified victim and leaves.

One victim, George Chiune said he was coming from the local shebeen when the baboon attacked him and pinned him down.

“I thought it wanted to kill me but realized it was after my bum,”, George said.

Five men were admitted to hospital yesterday after experiencing acute  anal pains and fatigue. Doctors confirmed the men have anal cancer.

The baboon, which has been nicknamed Somizi travels alone and this, according to animal behaviour specialist is a strange occurrence because baboons are known to ravel in troops. One specialist, Lizzie McKenzie said “the baboon might be an outcast and chased away from it’s troop. That is why it is travelling alone but as to the reason it’s attacking only males, it beats me. I have never seen that behaviour in my 20 years in this field,”she said.

When journalists visited the village, all male school kids were said to be wearing dresses as a preventative measure until the baboon has been dealt with.

Man found 'masturbating vigorously' downtown, says he did it because he hates Portland
by KATU Staff
Friday, May 12th 2017

Terry Lee Andreassen (Multnomah Co. Jail)

AA
PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Police say they've arrested a man for allegedly "masturbating vigorously" outside a non-profit.

Someone called 911 on May 3 reporting they saw a man exposing himself outside New Avenues for Youth on SW 9th Avenue. When officers responded, several witnesses pointed out the suspect, whose "erect penis was exposed to the public while he masturbated vigorously," court documents say.

When an officer asked him why he was doing that in public, the man said he was on meth, wanted to go back to prison and said he "[expletive] hates Portland," documents say.

Terry Lee Andreassen was arrested on felony charges of public indecency.

It looks like there is going to be some kind of control..... Finally.

But the little babies that like to play with there silly guns are crying........ you can still play with lil toys, just keep it behind closed doors of a shooting range.

instead of standing out in the street showing, like a kid playing cops n robbers.7

We don’t take away a citizen’s natural rights because a criminal somewhere abused his. Now be careful or someone might become distressed by your posts and you get in trouble.

“(1) A person is guilty of an offence if, with intent to cause a person harassment, alarm or distress, he—

(a) uses threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour, or disorderly behaviour, or
(b) displays any writing, sign or other visible representation which is threatening, abusive or insulting,
thereby causing that or another person harassment, alarm or distress.”
