That looks pretty fuckin righteous.  I will definitely be tuning into this one.  Looks like more action than Deadwood, which was always my problem with the show.  I loved it, but I also love shootouts.  This one looks a little more in that vein.

It looks REALLY good to me so far.

NBC is also making a civil war era show as well - Reconstruction.

I came on here to post about this, glad I seen this topic. Anyway this show looks good and I am willing to bet it will be a great show. AMC has got an amazing track record with their shows, Breaking Bad (my all time favorite), Walking Dead, The Prisoner, Mad Men and The Killing all quality shows.

I am looking forward to Hell on Wheels and can't wait to see it.

Hopefully it will be a bit more gunslingerey than Deadwood was.  Don't get me wrong, I liked the show but there were 2 cool shootouts with wild bill and then the series was devoid of them for the entirety.

Deadwood was masterful but you are right, not much gunplay.

Some new pics from the show courtesy of IGN.  The gunslingers outfit looks exactly like John's deadly assassin outfit, just without the eye patch.  I'm getting pretty excited about this thing.

Post by: travilanche on November 07, 2011, 02:44:19 AM
Ok, so the first episode of this show was badass.  And if the rest of the season is anything like this weeks episode then we can expect plenty of violence.  The gunslinger guy is damn cool.  He shot a dude in the first 2 minutes of the show, so hopefully that's a sign of things to come.  Those Indians were friggin brutal too.  What are everyone elses thoughts on the pilot?
Title: RE: Hell on Wheels (slightly OT)
Post by: Paranoia on November 07, 2011, 03:07:14 AM
I was busy with something else while watching, but I was able to catch most of the episode. The opening scene, and even the gunslinger, remind me a lot of Red Dead. Maybe they had some inspiration from it?

I missed a lot of the scenes that kind of showed you who's who, though. Hopefully they'll show a re-run next week and I'll actually be able to get some idea on why some stuff happened.

I liked it, and hopefully those 2 Irishmen will appear more often too. I was reading reviews though and a lot of them were negative.
Title: RE: Hell on Wheels (slightly OT)
Post by: CreativKru on November 07, 2011, 03:22:14 PM
I loved it. I thought it was brutal enough to be quite realistic. Is beautifully filmed and I am drooling over the amount of detail there is. I feel Cullen and Elam are pretty deep and I liked the twist at the end of this show. I am looking forward to learning the story behind the baptized native. Cullen is a badass!
Title: RE: Hell on Wheels (slightly OT)
Post by: TonberryChef on November 07, 2011, 06:30:59 PM
Yeah, I was thinking to myself how much Cullen could be a double for John Marston. Which ain't at all a bad thing. :P

But yeah, the show seems pretty epic so far. It was a great first episode and I'm pretty interested in almost everyone we've thus far met. Gorgeous camera-work, a perfectly atmospheric score, an intriguing cast of characters and a western setting make this show a must-watch for me. I'm impressed. :)
Title: RE: Hell on Wheels (slightly OT)
Post by: HenryWilliamFrench on November 07, 2011, 07:16:45 PM
I couldn't help making the comparision to Marston as well.  Episode was awesome.  I loved the arrow that went all the way through that one poor bastard.  I'll for sure be watching this show.

i thought it was a good first episode. The head of the railroad is a great villain. The best line of the episode was in the first scene, "Senator, are you trying to renegotiate a bride?" Awesome stuff.

So after reading this thread I gave it a go since the pilot is online on amc and they havent aired ep 2 I think.

Also set up tivo to record them since the walking dead was great gruesome at times but great.

So far im 20 minutes in and am loving it specially the drama with the politics and the railroad feels like history class being redone with entertainment factored in.

I thought I would post the link to this info on Cullen's revolver, the Griswold Gunnison.  Made only for the Confederate army during the Civil War, it is a very interesting piece but it seems difficult to find any real info on it due to it's very limited, and short production life.  It doesn't even have a Wikipedia entry.

Nice looking gun isn't it? Certainly enjoyed the pilot for this show. Colm Meany does a great bad guy, especially now that he's all old and fat and gnarly looking. Finally something that looks like it might rival Deadwood. I just hope it doesn't get cancelled.
Title: RE: Hell on Wheels (slightly OT)
Post by: travilanche on November 09, 2011, 02:07:57 AM
Could be a good gun to have in the next Red Dead perhaps.  I'm hoping they go back about that far.

I don't imagine the show will get cancelled.  They have really pushed the show and it comes on directly after The Walking Dead, so it will gain an audience.  I'm hoping for at least a few seasons.  There hasn't even been a Western show since Deadwood, and that show had essentially no gunplay after Wild Bill was killed.
Title: RE: Hell on Wheels (slightly OT)
Post by: Butcherbunny on November 09, 2011, 03:53:13 AM
More gunplay would've been good indeed. I know the real life Seth Bullock was supposedly famous for keeping order without shooting people but it's not like it was historically accurate or anything (also a good reason for them to have kept Hickok around for a bit longer).

Ok, so the guys who produce the show....  Joe and Tony Gayton........... Tony Gayton got his career going after getting the Jack Nicholson Scholarship in Florida... he got a job after as a production assistant for John Milius, the dude behind the film adaptations of The Hunt for Red October, Dirty Harry, CONAN THE FRIKIN BARBARIAN, Geronimo: an American Legend, and of course.... Apocalypse Now.  Booyah.  He's credited with writing the lines:

- "I love the smell of napalm in the morning" - apocalypse now,
- "Go ahead. Make my day." -clint eastwood in Dirty Harry
- "Do I feel lucky?" same ^

AND the character John Goodman played in The Big Lebowski, Walter Sobchak, is based on him. Man it just keeps gettin' better with this guy....he's basically been a huge influence on the guys who produce this show....
oh, AND He is also a self proclaimed Zen Anarchist, just like me! lolz yeah no.  but technically yes.  Anyway, thought I'd share.  Cheers.

I haven't seen this weeks episode yet, but I do have it on my DVR to watch, probably tomorrow.  That's great that the show got renewed!  How many more episodes are there this season?  I'm glad they are finally drawing their guns on the show.  I've been very happy with the show and am thrilled that there will be a season 2.  According to Billy Riel's blog there's going to be a couple more western shows on tv later on in the year as well.  I don't know if there's any good western movies coming out anytime soon though.  I watched Blackthorn and that was pretty good.

On Brad Meltzer's decoded a couple weeks ago they did have an episode about how billy the kid faked his death and lived for another 60 years after he supposedly died, and that was pretty interesting.

This show was good before, but it has really stepped up its game in the last few weeks.  I can't wait to see what happens this week on the finale.  I don't think the Swede is going to make it to next season.

Just finished watching the season finale.

While the writing isn't exactly flawless and certain moments do seem a bit cliched, I do thoroughly enjoy this show. I think as time goes on, this show will become much more interesting and original all around. Hell, Sons of Anarchy wasn't that good at first and looked what that show has blossomed into.
Title: Re: Hell on Wheels (slightly OT)
Post by: travilanche on January 23, 2012, 11:36:17 AM
I loved the season finale.  It looks the Swede is going to make it to round two.  Although he seems to have lost all of his power over the other employees at this point.  It looks like Elam is excited about the prospect of being a gunslinger, and he seems to be a good shot too.  Can't wait for season 2.  I wonder how long it will be before season 2 starts.

How the Swede's character was handled was one of my biggest issues with the show. He could've been so much more of evil antagonist and a true bump in the road for Mr. Bohannon, at least for the first season.
He started off very promising, but he gets whipped by Bohannon half-way through the season and humiliated in the season finale. He can be nothing more than a comedic, sad sap character at this point.

Dude, he's gonna want revenge. I think he's gonna get close to killing Bohannon next season.

Dude, he's gonna want revenge. I think he's gonna get close to killing Bohannon next season.

He can't come back from that humiliation. They already ruined that character, IMO. It would be so forced if they tried to establish him as one of the top antagonists again.

So is this show worth checking out? Story aside, are the costumes and the settings faithfully true to the period?
Title: Re: Hell on Wheels (slightly OT)
Post by: Billy Riel on April 13, 2012, 12:13:27 PM
Yes, Big Bad Joe, I would at very least recommend watching 2-3 episodes (i.e. in order to get a greater sense of the characters and storyline) and my understanding is that significant historical research has gone into the show's creation. If you notice, the train that is the centerpiece is true to the period (i.e. it is a smaller post-Civil War train rather than the larger late 19th-century locomotive). They have also drawn upon a number of antique firearms collectors to ensure that the weapons are true to the era.

Thanks for the interest/question.

I saw the first episode (of season 2) and enjoyed it.....I found myself wanting more time given to Cullen with the outlaw Confederate gang....there were some interesting dynamics and an intriguing backstory there. I have a feeling that Durant will get Bohannon pardoned for his crimes in return for resuming his role as railway foreman...which is fine....I just wanted to see more of Cullen with his former Confederate brothers-in-arms and how he negotiated that outlaw lifestyle with his own moral code.

Looking forward to episode 2 tomorrow night! (August 19)

Hope everyone is enjoying the second season of Hell on Wheels thus far....it has been pretty epic!

I written about the very effective use of music at the end of episode 2 (in Season Two), for those interested:

I thought this last episode was pretty good.  Far better than the first 2 episodes imo.  It looks like it could get pretty interesting as the season progresses.

And yeah, the music has been good so far.

For those interested in the wider backdrop/history to the period in which Hell on Wheels is set, AMC is now screening the acclaimed Into the West mini-series for six weeks - each episode runs for two hours and leads right into the current season of Hell on Wheels. This week's episode of Into the West (the epic historical series that AMC is currently screening prior to each week's episode of Hell on Wheels) features the transcontinental railroad and is in fact titled, "Hell on Wheels".  ;) A perfect lead-in for episode 7 of HoW!

Lily's death took me by surprise.

Any word if AMC renewed this for a 3rd season?

I watched the pilot. Didn't really get into it. I kept comparing it to Deadwood, which IMO is one of the best shows ever, so it's tough for HoW to compete. Should I give it a second chance?

The first season is a bit draggy Lasher.  But it does pick up at the end.  And season 2 was great.  Much improved from season one.

For those that follow AMC's Hell on Wheels, you will be happy to know that a new "showrunner" (basically the exec producer on a TV series) has been found. The previous one stepped down after AMC had announced a third season and while that did not mean the third season wouldn't be shot, it was a key piece that had to be found before going forward next year. Here is a link with info:

For those interested/able to watch....Wyoming PBS will be premiering a documentary that looks at the arrival of the transcontinental
railroad (and the mobile "Hell on Wheels" town) in Wyoming in 1868....the film will run on March 10th and I have posted info at this link:

http://westernsreboot.com/2013/03/01/wyoming-pbs-documentary-to-look-at-union-pacific-hell-on-wheels/

In terms of your comment about the end of Season 2, Mandalore....I know many were shocked with some of developments at the end of that season but to my mind, the finale did create a number of options for developing the characters that remain.....life was brutal in that time period and the "machine of progress" marches forward with the railroad in the series.

AMC has just released another round of behind-the-scenes photos from Season Two....including pics from that season's finale.....if interested, I have posted about it at:

http://westernsreboot.com/2013/03/04/hell-on-wheels-behind-the-scenes-pics-season-two-part-two/

In terms of what you say, travilanche.....I put the demise of certain characters into the context of the time - i.e. that there could be the real possibility of likable people/characters meeting an untimely end for a whole host of reasons. In that sense, it plays as realistic to me. That said, I will agree that the death of some individuals was shocking/surprising within the narrative arc of the series.

Damn just finished season 2.

A lot of things was unexpected which, in some ways, is nice for a change. Most TV shows these days are too predictable. Lilly getting killed was pretty unexpected. Shame, she was a good character. Swede is a dick. He's probably still alive somehow too. Damn good show.

I did not care for last weeks episode where they were searching for the baby, but I loved this weeks episode!  The swede did exactly what I knew he would do and murdered that family.  I really wonder what his ultimate goal is though.  It was so awesome when Bohannon shot that dude point blank in the face.

And Sean got what he deserved as well when Cullen fired his snake ass.  Mickey warned him.  I absolutely loved the scene at the end with Bohannon and Grant becoming VERY fast friends.  Cullen laughing when Grant told him he changed the name of Durrant's town was awesome.  And finally Durrant got the real "fuck you!" He deserves.

Cannot wait for Saturday's episode!

Is there going to be a season 4 to begin with? Haven't heard anything about it so I don't know if AMC has renewed it or not.

I haven't heard officially so far, but the show does have a fairly big audience and the network is proud of the show.  Which says alot coming from the network that had breaking bad.  So I just assume it will get renewed.

Billy might know more about that though.

Hey there....no official word yet on the renewal for HoW Season 4....I would expect it wouldn't be too far removed (either before or after) from any 411 on the DVD release for Season 3...so when news about that comes, we should have a clue, I suspect. That said, from "unofficial chatter", all things point to a renewal for next year.

So looking for a replacement to fill The Walking Dead and Justified gap, I've discovered this show late and have just finished watching Series 2 but got to say I was so disappointed they killed off a main character and that shitbag Swede looks like he'll be making a comeback  :-\

I won't be coming back very often to this thread until I'm up to date as I don't want to in inadvertently see any spoilers  ;)

Is Deadwood worth a look????

Hell on Wheels is a great show. I haven't see the third series because I have to wait till it comes to netflix but I'm looking forward to it.

Deadwood has a really good series one but then it degrades and gets worse, by the end of the third series I was really bored. Good show but it just turned into a political western... kinda boring In my opinion

Hell on wheels is awesome but is slow and irregular and late to Netflix.  Season 1 of deadwood is awesome but like convex said, it slows down quite a bit.  A good old school western tv show is gunsmoke, and a good futuristic western is firefly, which blends space and the old west.  Lonesome dove was a 3 part mini series starring Robert Duvall, and also had a 3 part prequel called Comanche moon.  It also had a tv series based on the kid that was pretty good.  Another good post apocalyptic show is Jericho.  It, like firefly, was canceled too early by fox.  Hatfields and McCoys with Kevin Costner. Longmire is also pretty good but was slow moving.  Vegas looked good but I never caught it and I think it got canceled.

Fantastic!  Been wondering in the back of my mind when this starts again.  So thanks for the info as usually, billy!

Considering where we left off last season, this one should be veeeery interesting!

Thanks for that info Billy, so glad they made another season. Looking forward to it.

Lonesome Dove is one of my favorites.. I'm still in the middle of Hatfield & McCoys, and I've heard of Deadwood but never seen it.. seems like a lot of people liked that one.

Deadwood was good until the third season, got kinda boring after a while.

I still haven't seen the third season on Hell on Wheels, I need it to arrive on Netflix...

As some might already know, Season 4 of Hell on Wheels on AMC debuts tomorrow night at 9pm (EST)! In preparation for that, AMC is actually running a marathon of Seasons 1-3 as a lead-in to the premiere. The marathon begins today at 3pm (EST) and is a total of 30 hours straight!

For more info (and some new clips previewing S4), I have written about the show at this new post on my Western genre site:

Just finished Season 3, liked the season, but the ending felt more like a regular episode than a season finale. Looking forward to season 4.

Been enjoying the new season for the most part.  I did not however, like the part where Cullen bugs bunnied the swede into admitting what he had done.  That part was pretty lame.

I agree Trav, they coulda found a better way to free Cullen from the Mormon camp but its history now. This season has been great so far, love the new villains I.e. the provisional government carpetbaggers. Its really becoming as good, if not better than the first season of deadwood. Im still convinced Elam will be back, I know Common isnt in the credits at the beginning but I just have a feeling he'll return, Bohannon needs allies and joining forces with Durant doesn't suit his character.

Just got caught up.  Pretty bummed Elam is gone for good.  He was a great character.  Psalms shouldn't have been so hard on Cullen though.  He really had no choice.  It still sucks though.  R.I.P. Elam Ferguson!

Yea I was happy to see Elam back and really disappointed to see him go...again. Psalms will come around once Cullen gets everyone out of jail and deals with the faux marshal, I'm glad they moved the wife and baby back to fort smith so that storyline can take a break. Idk what theyre doing with the sweed (even though he's from Norway lol) but I imagine he'll battle Cullen one more time before its all said and done.

Off Topic- Its been ten years since HBO made Deadwood, I've gone back to rewatch the 3 seasons and I'm halfway through the third. Its a show you need not be a western fanatic to enjoy, a la RDR, I often relate the show's set to Armadillo if rockstar had made it as large as Blackwater. The dialogue of Deadwood is second to none in its mixture of profanity and proficient vocabulary, its illustrations of how difficult it was to attain things we take for granted today and just how little life was worth if you weren't wealthy or powerful. Its a shame the show cost too much to produce and only got 3 seasons but it really was a gem.

Looking forward to it. im kinda annoyed by Durant's contempt for Bohannon since he did save the railroad a few times, but I guess they want Doc to be the villain in this final season. I didn't see Cullen's wife in any of the previews so im curious to see if he finds his family and what condition theyre in if he does find them. He lost just about everyone he's ever cared about, would be sadly fitting if finishing the railroad costs him what little he has left.

Anyone watch any of the final season? I think it's interesting that they're taking it to the other railroad company but I don't know if it was the right choice for the last season.

I have to catch up, I watched the first 3 episodes up until they let the Chinese take home their dead. Like the other seasons this one has started slow but im sure it will get intense by the finale.

Anyone been keeping up with it? It's been pretty lackluster for a while but that last gunfight was pretty neat.
When he shot Chang instead of listening to his monologue was pretty great.
